Protecting Seniors from Fraud and Financial Scams

Sheriff David Zoerner believes protecting the community means more than fighting violent crime—it also means safeguarding seniors from criminals who prey on their trust and life savings. Under his leadership, the Kenosha County Sheriff's Department works to investigate financial crimes while educating residents on how to recognize and avoid common scams.

In 2023, the Sheriff's Department investigated multiple fraud cases in which elderly residents were targeted by criminals posing as attorneys and bail agents. The scammers falsely claimed that a grandchild had been arrested after a serious accident and urgently needed cash to be released from jail. Victims were instructed to withdraw large sums of money before someone posing as a "bail bondsman" arrived at their home to collect the cash.

These criminals relied on fear, urgency, and deception to exploit vulnerable members of the community. Detectives immediately began investigating the incidents while also warning residents about the scam to prevent additional victims.

The Sheriff's Office reminded the public that Wisconsin does not use bail bondsmen. In Kenosha County, bail is posted directly through the Kenosha County Jail—not by providing cash to someone who comes to your home.

"Criminals who target our seniors are stealing more than money—they're taking advantage of trust and exploiting some of the most vulnerable members of our community. We are committed to investigating these crimes, educating the public, and helping families recognize these scams before another victim loses their hard-earned savings."

Sheriff Zoerner has emphasized that public safety includes prevention as well as enforcement. Through community outreach, public awareness campaigns, and partnerships with local organizations, the Sheriff's Office works to educate residents about emerging scams while encouraging anyone who receives a suspicious call to contact law enforcement immediately. By keeping the public informed, the Sheriff's Department helps prevent criminals from victimizing Kenosha County families.
